In 2022, there were a total of 48,204 gun-related deaths. Of those, over 27,032 were suicides by firearm, and 19,651 were homicides. Additionally, 463 people died from unintentional gun injuries, and an estimated 643 individuals were fatally shot by law enforcement. The overall gun death rate was 14.5 per 100,000 population, averaging approximately 132 deaths per day due to gun violence.
For the third straight year, firearms were the leading cause of death for children and teens ages 1 to 17, surpassing car crashes, cancer, poisoning, and other causes. In 2022 alone, there were 2,526 gun deaths among 1- to 17-year-olds, averaging nearly 7 deaths per day.
Unintentional Gun Injuries: 463 people died from unintentional gun injuries.
